How to Find a School's UDISE Code (udiseplus.gov.in) — Step by Step.

The UDISE code is an 11-digit number that uniquely identifies every recognised school in India on UDISE+ (udiseplus.gov.in), the Ministry of Education's national school database. You need it for scholarship forms, board registrations, admissions paperwork, bank and government forms that ask "school UDISE code" — and school staff need it for practically every official return. Here's how to find it.

Method 1 — Search on the UDISE+ portal

1. Open udiseplus.gov.in in your browser.
2. Look for the school directory / "Know Your School" search option on the portal.
3. Select the state and district, then narrow by block/area if asked.
4. Type the school's name (or part of it) and search.
5. The result shows the school's name, location and its 11-digit UDISE code.

Try spelling variations if the school doesn't appear — official records sometimes register schools under formal names ("St. Mary's Higher Secondary School" rather than "St. Mary's").

Method 2 — Check school documents

The UDISE code is printed on many school-issued documents: transfer certificates, report cards, bonafide certificates, and often the school's letterhead or notice board. Board-exam registration documents typically carry it too. If you have any official paper from the school, check the header and footer first — it's usually faster than the portal.

Method 3 — Ask the school or the block office

The school office knows its own code — it uses it for every UDISE+ return. For verification from the government side, the Block Education Officer (BEO) or district education office maintains the list of codes for all schools in their jurisdiction.

What the 11 digits mean

The code is structured, not random: the leading digits identify the state, followed by digits for the district and block, ending in a serial that pins down the individual school. That's why two schools in the same block share most of their prefix and differ only at the end. The structure means a UDISE code doesn't just identify a school — it locates it administratively, which is exactly why so many government processes key off it.

School not listed, or details wrong?

New schools receive a code through the recognition/registration process, initiated via the district education authorities — not self-service on the portal. If an existing school's details are wrong (name spelling, address, management type), the school's UDISE+ in-charge raises the correction through the portal's school-profile module with the block/district office. Parents spotting an error should simply inform the school office.
