The case for a structured answer sheet
Blank paper is the default answer medium in most tuition centres and plenty of schools, and it quietly taxes everyone. Students burn exam minutes drawing margins and deciding where answers go. Mark one question across all scripts, not one script across all questions — consistency of judgement improves and the marking scheme stays loaded in your head. The marks margin makes this natural: each pass fills one row of the margin down the pile. Total in the margin, not in your head — the child, the parent and the re-check can all follow the same arithmetic. Keep the key beside the grid — with fixed bubble positions, objective marking is pattern-matching, and pattern-matching is fast precisely because nothing moves.
One more habit worth institutionalising: archive one marked sheet per test as the moderation reference. When a parent questions a total or a second teacher takes over a batch midway, the archived sheet shows exactly how the marking scheme was applied — what earned full marks, where partial credit was drawn, how presentation was treated. Disputes end faster when the precedent is a document rather than a recollection.
