Why fair papers start with a grid, not a question
Every complaint about an unfair paper — "the whole thing came from two chapters", "it was all memory questions", "nothing matched the pattern" — is a complaint about a missing blueprint. A question paper written question-by-question inherits its author's habits: favourite chapters get over-tested, question types repeat, and the cognitive mix drifts toward whatever is easiest to write on a Sunday night, which is nearly always recall. The blueprint is the discipline that prevents this: a table, fixed before writing begins, that says how the paper's marks distribute across chapters and across levels of thinking.
Boards work this way for a reason. CBSE publishes subject-wise design grids and sample papers precisely so that a student in Kochi and a student in Kanpur sit structurally identical exams; the current pattern goes further and fixes the cognitive economy of the paper itself, with around half of board-paper marks on competency-based questions. When your internal papers run on a grid too, your students meet the board's structure long before the board hall — and your paper-setting stops depending on mood.
How this generator builds the grid
The tool does the part of blueprint-making that is pure arithmetic, and the part people get wrong. You enter chapters with their mark weightage — proportional to teaching time is the sound default — and a three-band cognitive mix. The generator then splits every chapter's marks across the bands using largest-remainder rounding, the same method proportional-representation systems use, so each row still totals its chapter's marks exactly and the grand total equals the paper total. No grid that "almost" adds to 80: the arithmetic always closes, which is precisely the property hand-built blueprints most often lack.
The three bands are a deliberate simplification of Bloom's six levels into the distinctions that matter for paper-setting: remember/understand (retrieve and explain), apply (use in a new situation — where competency begins), and analyse & above (break down, judge, create). If your board's design prescribes a finer split, generate with the three bands and subdivide by hand — the closing arithmetic still holds within each band.
Treat the generated grid as a strong draft, not a verdict. If chapter 4 is conceptually rich and deserves its analysis marks concentrated in one big question rather than spread thin, edit the cells after printing — the tool's job was to make the starting point honest, so your edits are deviations you chose rather than drift you never noticed.
Choosing weightages that survive scrutiny
Chapter weightage: the defensible rule is proportionality — a unit that took a fifth of the term's teaching carries about a fifth of the marks. Deviate deliberately: prerequisite-heavy chapters that later units build on can justify extra weight; a chapter taught in the exam week can justify less. What you should never do is discover the weightage after the paper is written, which is what happens without a grid.
Cognitive mix: class maturity sets the centre of gravity. A workable ladder — primary classes around 50/35/15, middle school around 40/40/20, secondary 30/40/30, senior secondary for board-pattern subjects 25/45/30 or as your board's design prescribes. Two cautions from marking rooms: papers below ~15% analysis let toppers coast, and papers above ~50% recall test the photocopier more than the child. The mix is also the honest answer to "why did my child score less this term" — you can show the parent the grid and the answer sheet side by side.
