A timetable that survives contact
Most timetables die in week one because they schedule an imaginary student. This is the method for scheduling the real one: backwards from the date, upfront about hours, rebuilt weekly instead of abandoned.

Why timetables fail, specifically
The classic timetable is a fantasy document: every day identical, every hour productive, no school test, no cousin's wedding, no bad Tuesday. It fails its first collision with reality, and the failure teaches the wrong lesson, that planning does not work, when the actual lesson is that this planning method does not. The three fatal flaws recur everywhere: planning forwards from enthusiasm instead of backwards from the date, budgeting aspirational hours instead of real ones, and treating the plan as a monument instead of a draft that expects revision.
The backwards method in one paragraph
Start from the exam date and count real weeks. Subtract a protected block at the end for revision and mocks, roughly a quarter of the time. What remains is your learning window, and your syllabus must fit inside it at your real weekly hours; if it does not fit, the timetable's first job is telling you that today, while triage is still cheap. Only then do days get filled, and they get filled with specific, finishable tasks, not subject names.

Real weeks to the exam, minus a protected quarter for revision and mocks at the end. The remainder is your learning window; write its end date down, because every slipped week comes out of the protected block.

Budget your honest week
Count only genuinely plannable self-study hours, after school, coaching, travel and life. Then plan slightly under that number; a plan you beat builds compliance, a plan that beats you builds avoidance.

Fit the syllabus or triage it
Spread the remaining syllabus across the learning window. If it fits, proceed; if it does not, cut by weightage now rather than by panic later, and let the decision be visible in the plan.

Fill days with finishable tasks
Three to five concrete tasks a day, each completable in its slot, disliked subjects scheduled first and small. Every finished chapter immediately earns a revision slot within days, not months.

Rebuild weekly, at a fixed time
Sunday evening, twenty minutes: mark what happened, recompute what remains, adjust next week. The rebuild ritual is the difference between a plan that adapts and a plan that gets abandoned.
A worked example
A student with 16 real weeks and 20 real hours: 320 total, 80 protected, 240 for learning. Her remaining syllabus needs roughly 260 task-hours by her own estimate, so the plan's first output is a triage conversation: two low-weightage chapters move to summary-only treatment, and the fit is restored before week one begins. Daily plans carry four tasks; the hated subject opens each morning for thirty minutes; Sunday evening rebuilds the week in twenty. The timetable survives a fever in week six because the rebuild absorbs it, and learning ends on schedule with the protected month intact.

The protected block is the whole method
If one idea survives this page, let it be the protected block: the final quarter of your runway belongs to revision and mocks, and learning must end when it begins. Every timetable disaster story is, underneath, the same story: learning that sprawled into the revision weeks until the exam arrived mid-syllabus. Guard the block the way you would guard the exam day itself, because functionally it is the exam day, rehearsed.
Motivation is not a scheduling input
Notice what the method never asks: how motivated you are. Plans built on motivation inherit its volatility; plans built on small, finishable, scheduled tasks run on habit, which is boring and therefore reliable. Build the timetable a slightly tired version of you can follow, and the inspired version will occasionally exceed it, which is the correct direction of surprise. The block also needs defending from a subtler thief: 'productive' new material disguised as revision, the new reference book opened in the final month. If it was not studied before the block, it does not enter the block.

Frequently asked questions
Should I plan my timetable by hours or by tasks?
Tasks, sized to fit hours: 'finish electrostatics examples 1–12' is completable and checkable, 'physics 6–8pm' is neither. Hour-block plans reward sitting; task plans reward finishing, and finishing is the only currency the exam accepts.
How detailed should a daily plan be?
Three to five concrete tasks per day is the working range: enough to fill the hours, few enough that a completed day is achievable. A day you can finish builds the habit that carries the plan; a day you can never finish teaches you to stop looking at it.
What about school or college hours I can't control?
They are simply subtracted before planning: your plannable week is what remains after fixed commitments, counted without flattery. A 20-hour real week planned well beats a 40-hour fantasy week planned beautifully.
How do I handle subjects I hate?
Schedule them first and small: the disliked subject gets a short, daily, non-negotiable slot, because avoidance compounds into fear and fear into a score ceiling. Twenty daily minutes of the hated subject outperforms the heroic Sunday you keep postponing.
Should weekends look different from weekdays?
Yes, by design: weekdays carry the short recurring slots, weekends carry the long blocks, tests and the weekly rebuild. A timetable that ignores the week's natural shape is fighting physics it could be using.
When should I rebuild versus push through?
Rebuild weekly at a fixed time regardless, and immediately after any three-day derailment. The rebuild is not failure; it is the maintenance that makes the plan permanent. Pushing through on a broken plan is how plans get quietly abandoned.
Should the timetable include buffer days?
Yes, roughly one unplanned day per fortnight, scheduled as genuinely empty. Buffers absorb the inevitable derailments so the plan does not; a timetable without slack is a timetable already broken, just not yet informed of it.
