What is ANPR?

Automatic Number Plate Recognition, explained

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is a camera-based vehicle access system. An IR-capable IP camera captures the front number plate, edge-processing OCR reads the characters in under 200 milliseconds, and the system signals the boom barrier to open if the plate is registered to a resident or pre-approved guest — no RFID tag, no sticker, no guard verification. EstateDeck ANPR is built for Indian gated communities and housing societies, supports all Indian plate formats (including the BH series), and operates 24/7 through power cuts and internet outages via local caching.

How it works

From plate to open barrier — in under 200 milliseconds

The full sequence runs locally on the camera. Internet drops do not stop it.

Vehicle approaches

IR camera detects the car at 5 to 10 metres and captures the front plate image.

Edge OCR reads

On-camera software performs OCR on the plate in under 200 milliseconds.

Database lookup

Plate matched against resident database and active guest pre-approvals — locally cached.

Barrier opens or guard alerted

Registered: relay opens the barrier before the car stops. Unknown: guard app fires.

Entry logged

Plate, photo, timestamp, decision — stored for police-verification searches.

Why replace RFID?

The RFID headaches ANPR eliminates for good

RFID tags solved one problem in 2015. They created six others.

"A resident lost their RFID tag for the third time this year. Now they're at the office for a replacement."
The plate is the tag. It can't be lost or damaged. Zero replacement requests, ever.
"Someone lent their RFID sticker to a friend who now enters the society whenever they want."
Plates are vehicle-specific. You can't transfer a plate between cars — access is tied to the vehicle, not a sticker.
"Our guest's car was stuck at the gate for 10 minutes while the guard called the resident to verify."
Residents pre-register guest plates in the app. ANPR opens the barrier automatically — no intercom.
"We have 300 cars in the society. RFID tags cost us money every month — issue, track, replace, repeat."
RFID tags cost ₹150–400 each. ANPR uses the plate already on the car. Per-vehicle cost: ₹0.
"An ex-tenant returned their RFID tag but it somehow still lets them through. Nobody deactivated it."
Remove a plate from the app and access is gone the same second — no hardware to collect.
"Our guard waves cars through without checking because the RFID reader is slow and a queue builds up."
Sub-200ms recognition. No queue forms. The barrier opens before the car stops — no shortcuts possible.

🏠 Resident Vehicle Access

Non-Stop Entry for Residents

The camera reads the plate and sends the relay signal to the barrier before the car reaches the sensor. No rolling down windows, no waiting, no friction.

  • Edge processing: OCR runs locally on the camera — not waiting on cloud round-trip.
  • Vehicle-to-unit mapping: every plate linked to a flat and owner — accountability per entry.
  • Multi-car per flat: up to the allocated number per flat; system denies if parking is full.
  • Instant deactivation: remove a plate from the app and access blocks the same second.
👤

Guest Plate Pre-Authorization

Resident enters the guest's vehicle number in the app before the visit. ANPR consumes that signal from the Visitor Management module.

  • 20-second pre-registration: resident types the guest's plate; system marks it active.
  • Auto-open on arrival: camera reads, plate matches active guest list, barrier opens.
  • One-time token: guest access expires after exit; same plate cannot re-enter without re-auth.
  • Synced log: visit record posts to the digital gate register on Visitor Management.

🔐 Security & Threat Detection

🚫

Blacklist & Watchlist Enforcement

Flag vehicles from past incidents, parking violations or security concerns. When a flagged plate approaches, the barrier stays locked and the guard app fires.

  • Blacklist enforcement: flagged plates → barrier lock + instant guard-app alert.
  • Unknown-vehicle log: every unregistered plate photographed and indexed for police verification.
  • Wrong-way detection: camera catches vehicles trying to exit through the entry lane.
  • Anti-tailgating: vehicle-count sensor detects multiple vehicles riding one authorization.

★★★★★

"Whitefield Heights runs 312 vehicles across three towers. We were re-issuing RFID tags at about ₹35,000 a quarter — lost, damaged, transferred between cars. ANPR cut that line item to zero. What surprised the committee was the audit trail: every entry photographed and timestamped. Our last police-verification request was answered in eight minutes flat."

Each adjacent function has its own page. Here is where each lives.

Sibling feature

Walk-in visitors and deliveries?

That is people, not vehicles. Photo, ID, pre-approval and guard workflow live on Visitor Management.

Sibling feature

Face-based entry for domestic staff?

Same computer-vision discipline, different subject. Face Recognition for maids, drivers and cooks lives on Face Recognition.

Sibling feature

Guard patrol routes inside the society?

ANPR runs at the gate. What the guard does on the grounds — QR checkpoints, patrol logs, SOS handling — lives on Guard Patrol.

Competitor disambig

RFID-only vendors?

Vendors selling UHF RFID tags are not direct alternatives. EstateDeck supports ANPR as the primary mechanism; RFID can run alongside in dust-heavy environments where cameras struggle.

Consumer app disambig

MyGate or NoBrokerHood?

Those are end-to-end consumer apps. EstateDeck ANPR is the mechanism layer your committee runs — with deeper audit trails, multi-gate support and integration into the rest of the platform.

Schools, colleges or coaching?

EstateDeck is property-only. For K-12 schools see SchoolDeck; colleges CampusAlly.

Have questions?

ANPR for gated communities — common questions

What is ANPR for gated communities?

ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) for gated communities is a camera-based vehicle access system. It reads a vehicle's number plate using optical character recognition and automatically opens the boom barrier if the plate is registered — without RFID tags, stickers, or guard verification. The entire detect-to-open sequence takes under 200 milliseconds.

How does ANPR work at a gated community entrance?

An IR camera captures the front plate as the vehicle approaches. Edge-processing software reads the plate using OCR in under 200ms. If it matches the resident or pre-approved guest database, a dry-contact relay opens the boom barrier before the car needs to stop. If unrecognized, the security guard app gets an instant alert with the plate photo for manual verification.

Does ANPR work at night in a housing society?

Yes. EstateDeck ANPR uses IP cameras with high-intensity Infrared (IR) illuminators that read plates in complete darkness. The IR light cuts through vehicle headlight glare and captures high-contrast plate images at 2 AM just as reliably as at noon. No external gate-lighting upgrade is required.

Is ANPR better than RFID for a housing society?

For most societies, yes. ANPR has zero ongoing hardware cost per vehicle vs ₹150–400 per RFID tag plus replacements, cannot be transferred between cars because plates are vehicle-specific, automates guest access without temporary tags, and provides a photographic record of every entry. RFID may still be preferred in extremely dusty environments where cameras struggle.

What happens if the number plate is dirty or partially obscured?

If the OCR confidence score drops below the configured threshold (typically 80 percent), EstateDeck does not auto-open the barrier. Instead, the guard app receives an instant notification with the captured image, allowing manual verification and authorization — preventing both false opens and unnecessary resident frustration.

Can ANPR handle guest vehicles automatically?

Yes. Residents register their guest's vehicle number in the EstateDeck app before the visit, using the Visitor Management guest pre-approval flow. ANPR consumes that signal. When the guest arrives, the camera recognizes the plate as an expected visitor and opens the barrier without any intercom call. Guest access auto-expires after the vehicle exits.

What happens if the internet connection goes down at the gate?

EstateDeck ANPR runs an offline mode. The local barrier controller holds a cached copy of the registered vehicle database. If internet drops, the system continues authorizing registered residents using the local cache. All entries are logged locally and sync back to the cloud the moment connectivity restores.

Does EstateDeck ANPR work with existing boom barriers?

Yes. The ANPR controller integrates with any standard boom barrier via a dry-contact relay — including FAAC, Came, Nice and the common Indian brands. Existing barrier infrastructure does not need to be replaced. The free site survey confirms compatibility before installation.

What's the difference between ANPR and Visitor Management?

ANPR handles vehicles — the OCR camera, plate matching, barrier open/close. Visitor Management handles people — walk-in guests, delivery, domestic staff, photo and ID capture, guest pre-approval workflow. They connect when a resident pre-approves a guest's vehicle in Visitor Management and ANPR reads that plate at the gate. Two modules, two deep pages, one shared signal.

Will EstateDeck ANPR work for multiple gates or basement entry?

Yes. A single society can run ANPR at multiple gates — main entry, exit, basement parking — each with its own camera and controller, all reporting to one dashboard. Per-gate access rules are configurable (for example residents-only at basement, residents-plus-guests at main gate). Each gate is logged separately.
