SGPA to percentage calculator — with your university's formula

Convert SGPA to percentage — or percentage back to SGPA — using the formula your university actually publishes, not a one-size-fits-none multiplier. Free, browser-only, and honest about where estimates end and certified conversions begin.

Formula

Why there is no single SGPA-to-percentage formula

Semester Grade Point Average came to Indian campuses with choice-based credit systems, and every university that adopted it also adopted — separately, in its own ordinance — a rule for expressing grade points as the percentages that older institutions, some employers and many application forms still demand. Those rules were never centralised. The result is the daily confusion this page exists for: the same 8.2 SGPA "equals" 74.5% at a university using (SGPA − 0.75) × 10, 77.9% under a ×9.5 multiplier, and 82% under a straight ×10. None of these is wrong; each is right precisely where its university says so.

The (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 form deserves its prominence: it is the published equivalence at VTU, SPPU and a long list of state technical universities, which makes it the de-facto standard for Indian engineering transcripts. The subtraction embodies a deliberate policy — grade-point scales top out before 10 in practice, so the mapping is anchored to make a realistic topper's SGPA correspond to a realistic topper's percentage. Straight multipliers make the opposite choice. Neither is mathematics; both are policy, which is why only your university's version counts.

Estimates vs certified conversions — the distinction that matters

Every number this calculator produces is an estimate for your own planning: checking an eligibility cut-off, sizing up a shortlist, sanity-checking a form before the official figure arrives. The moment a percentage goes on an application — higher studies, public-sector recruitment, visa paperwork — the only figure that counts is the one your university certifies, usually via a conversion certificate from the examinations section or the formula printed on the transcript or degree ordinance. Recruiters verify against those documents, not against converters. If your university genuinely publishes no formula, say so on the form and attach the grade card; admissions offices handle this daily.

A related trap: some universities convert only the final CGPA, not per-semester SGPAs, and a few use different formulas for different programmes or admission years. When the stakes are real, ten minutes on your university's examination-ordinance page beats any converter on the internet — including this one. That honesty is the whole design of this tool: presets for the formulas universities actually publish, a custom slot for yours, and no pretence that the arithmetic is more official than it is.

SGPA, CGPA and the credit arithmetic underneath

SGPA is a credit-weighted average: each course's grade points multiplied by its credits, summed, divided by the semester's total credits — so a 4-credit core pulls your SGPA four times as hard as a 1-credit lab. CGPA runs the same weighting across every semester completed. Two students with identical marks can carry different SGPAs purely because their credit mixes differ, which is also why recomputing your own SGPA before converting it is worth doing when a grade card looks off. Our CBCS CGPA calculator with credits does exactly that computation — grade points and credits in, credit-weighted SGPA and multi-semester CGPA out — and pairs naturally with this converter: compute there, convert here.

For attendance-linked eligibility questions that travel with the same forms, the attendance eligibility calculator covers the other number colleges keep asking about.

For colleges: conversion queries are a records symptom

Every examinations section knows the season: transcript requests, conversion-certificate applications and "what is my percentage" emails arriving in the same week the university's portal queues them. The volume isn't really about formulas — students can multiply — it's about certified documents being slow to produce because results, credit maps and ordinance versions live in disconnected files. Institutions running academics on CampusAlly keep examination records, credit structures and result histories in one system, which turns transcript and conversion-certificate issuance into lookups instead of reconstructions — and quietly ends the era of hand-typed percentages that don't match the ordinance. The same records backbone feeds accreditation reporting, where result data has to reconcile anyway.

A note on accuracy: conversion formulas are set by each university's ordinances and change with regulation cycles. The presets here reflect widely published equivalences, but your university's current ordinance is the authority — verify before official use. Databus is not affiliated with any university or board.

SGPA conversion questions, answered

How do I convert SGPA to percentage?

With the formula your university publishes — most commonly (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 at VTU, SPPU and many technical universities; others use ×9.5 or their own equivalence. Confirm against your university's ordinance before official use.

What is 8.5 SGPA in percentage?

77.5% under (SGPA − 0.75) × 10; 80.75% under ×9.5. The spread is exactly why the university's own formula is the number that counts.

Is SGPA the same as CGPA?

No — SGPA is one semester's credit-weighted average; CGPA aggregates all semesters. Check whether your university converts per-semester SGPA or only final CGPA.

Which conversion do employers accept?

The one your university certifies — via conversion certificate or the transcript's printed formula. Self-computed figures from any online tool are planning estimates, not certified equivalences.

Is my data stored anywhere?

No — the calculation runs entirely in your browser; nothing is uploaded or saved.
