The National Board of Accreditation accredits programmes, not institutions — your B.Tech CSE stands or falls on its own record, separately from Mechanical next door. Assessment is outcome-based under the current framework (GAPC v4.0, aligned to the Washington Accord's 2021 review), against eleven Programme Outcomes and a ten-criterion Self-Assessment Report totalling 1000 marks. Tier I — autonomous institutions and universities — is graded per criterion and is the only route to Washington Accord recognition, the international passport for an Indian engineering degree. Tier II — programmes at affiliated colleges — is scored on aggregate: roughly 750/1000 for six-year accreditation, 600 for three-year. Outcome-linked criteria carry the largest block of marks by a wide margin, which is the framework's way of saying: show us students actually attain what the programme promises. Every programme that has survived a visit knows the failure mode. The SAR demands three years of consistent data — results, attainment, faculty, placements, progression — and the department has three years of files: marks in one coordinator's workbook, CO mappings in another's, a attainment computation redone from scratch each cycle because nobody can reproduce last year's, and evidence annexures assembled in a heroic month that consumes the department's actual teaching. Then the committee asks the one question spreadsheets cannot answer: show us where this number comes from. Attainment claimed at 72% traces to… a cell, in a file, whose formula someone edited in 2024.
The root cause isn't diligence — engineering departments are full of it — but architecture. Outcome-based accreditation assumes outcome-based records: assessments tagged to outcomes at the moment they're conducted, results flowing into attainment continuously, documents filed against criteria as they're generated. Records built that way make the SAR a report. Records built as scattered files make it archaeology, every three years, forever.

Reproducibility is the point the visit day proves. When a committee member picks PO3 and asks for its trail, the answer is a drill-down — PO3 ← contributing COs ← tagged assessment items ← actual marks distributions — not a defence of a spreadsheet's provenance. Attainment gaps surface semester by semester too, while corrective action (the framework's own expectation) can still be taken and documented, rather than being discovered retrospectively during SAR-writing when the cohort has already graduated.
Beyond outcomes, the SAR's criteria ask for the programme's operating record: student intake and progression, faculty numbers, qualifications and development, facilities and their utilisation, continuous improvement documentation, student activities and professional-society engagement. The tiers differ in who assesses and how it's scored, not in what evidence looks like. Tier II programmes chasing the ~600 and ~750 aggregate thresholds win or lose on the outcome-heavy criteria where computed-not-assembled attainment moves real marks. Tier I programmes — and Tier II programmes planning the jump via autonomy — face per-criterion scrutiny where reproducibility is the whole game, and where the Washington Accord stakes make the investment obvious: international recognition of your graduates' degrees rides on records your department controls today. Either way, the discipline is identical, which is why the system doesn't fork by tier; your SAR does.
One boundary, stated plainly: no software earns accreditation. Teaching quality, faculty strength and the programme's genuine outcomes decide the result, and the SAR's narrative remains the department's own work. What the platform removes is the tax — the months of assembly, the untraceable numbers, the evidence scramble — so the visit measures your programme rather than your filing. That is also the honest reason to start now rather than at announcement: records compound; assembly doesn't.
