Tutor revenue-share calculator

Revenue share is how much of coaching pays its teachers — a percentage of what the batch actually collects. Put in the batch numbers and see the payout, the institute margin, and what the deal really pays per session.

How the arithmetic works

Batch revenue is fee times students; the teacher payout is the agreed percentage of that; the institute keeps the rest to cover rent, staff, marketing and margin. The third output — payout divided by sessions taught — is the number both sides should look at, because a generous-sounding 50% of a half-empty batch can pay worse per hour than a modest salary, and a 30% share of a full batch can pay better than either.

Share versus salary, honestly

Revenue share aligns incentives — the teacher earns more when the batch fills — but it also transfers enrolment risk onto the teacher, which is why senior faculty often negotiate a floor (a minimum guarantee) plus a share above it. Salary does the opposite: the institute carries the risk and captures the upside. Most stable institutes converge on hybrids. Our coaching teacher salary guide covers the going structures in detail.

What makes any split workable

Whatever percentage you agree, the deal survives only if the inputs are recorded: students actually enrolled and paying, sessions actually taught, and payouts computed from those records rather than from memory at month-end. Disputed session counts are the fastest way to lose a good teacher. TutorDesk’s teacher and HR management keeps the ledger both sides trust — enrolments, sessions and payouts in one place.

Questions this calculator raises

Should the share be calculated on billed fees or collected fees?

Collected, almost always — paying a share on fees that never arrived breaks the institute. Make the basis explicit in the agreement, and make collections visible to the teacher so the number is trusted.

What is a typical revenue-share percentage?

It varies widely with subject, seniority and who brings the students, so treat any single number with suspicion. The useful discipline is the per-session output: compare the deal against what the same hours would earn elsewhere.

How do minimum guarantees fit the calculation?

A floor means the teacher receives max(guarantee, share). Run the calculator at your realistic batch size: if the share only beats the guarantee at full capacity, the guarantee is the real cost to plan around.

Does GST change the split?

If fees carry GST, decide whether the share applies to the fee before or after tax and write it down — a silent 18% disagreement sours partnerships. The GST-on-fees calculator shows both numbers.
