One NEET attempt — exactly how the net score and the marks lost are found.
A student sits NEET (+4 / −1, 180 questions). They get 140 correct, 20 wrong, and leave 20 unattempted.
So the net score is 540 out of 720, with 20 marks lost to wrong answers. If the same student had skipped those 20 instead of guessing, they'd have scored 560 — the penalty cost them 20 marks. That trade-off is exactly what the marks-lost view shows, so a student can see whether guessing is helping or hurting under that scheme.
Negative marking is a bet. The penalty decides whether the bet pays off on average.
With +4/−1 and four options, a random guess is break-even on average: 1 right (+4) for every 3 wrong (−3) cancels out. Net effect: roughly zero.
Rule out one or two options and the odds tip in your favour — the expected value of a guess turns positive. This is where marks are quietly won.
When the penalty is large relative to the reward, blind guessing loses marks on average. Skipping protects the score — there's no penalty for a blank.

Every negative-marking scheme is built from two numbers: the marks for a correct answer and the penalty for a wrong one. The net score is simply the reward minus the penalty: net = (correct × marks per correct) − (wrong × penalty per wrong). Unattempted questions sit outside the formula entirely — they score zero and are never penalised.
Schemes are often described as fractions of the question's value. A "one-fourth" scheme deducts a quarter of the marks for that question, so a +4 question loses 1, and a +1 question loses 0.25. A "one-third" scheme — used in UPSC Prelims — deducts a third, so a +2 question loses about 0.666. The calculator lets you set those penalties directly, or apply a preset.
The tool also reports the maximum possible score (every question correct, using the total it infers from your three counts), the marks lost to the penalty, and accuracy (correct ÷ attempted). Everything runs in your browser; nothing you type is uploaded.
Students use it the evening of a mock or the day an answer key drops — counting correct and wrong against the official key to get a net score before results. Coaching faculty use it to show a batch how much a guessing habit is costing, by re-running the same attempt as "wrong" versus "skipped". This is the line worth being precise about. A net score is a fact about one answer sheet. A percentile or an All India Rank is a fact about the whole cohort — it depends on how everyone else scored, and for JEE and NEET it comes from the NTA's normalisation across shifts over lakhs of candidates. A single net score can't produce a rank, and any tool that claims to is estimating.

Marking schemes, the formula, and what this tool does and doesn't do.
Use net score = (number of correct answers × marks per correct) − (number of wrong answers × penalty per wrong). Unattempted questions score zero and carry no penalty. For example, with the NEET +4/−1 scheme, 140 correct and 20 wrong gives (140 × 4) − (20 × 1) = 560 − 20 = 540.
NEET UG and JEE Main both award +4 marks for a correct answer and deduct 1 mark for a wrong answer, with 0 for unattempted. NEET has 180 questions for a maximum of 720 marks; JEE Main has 90 questions (75 to be attempted) for a maximum of 300 marks. Use the JEE/NEET preset to apply +4/−1 in one tap.
SSC CGL Tier 1 awards +2 for a correct answer and deducts 0.5 for a wrong one, across 100 questions for 200 marks. SSC CGL Tier 2 Paper 1 deducts 1 mark per wrong answer. The tool has presets for both, and unattempted questions are never penalised.
No. In JEE, NEET, SSC and most Indian exams, an unattempted question scores zero with no penalty. Only wrong answers are penalised. That is why leaving a question blank is safer than a blind guess when the penalty is high.
A one-third scheme deducts one-third of the marks for that question per wrong answer — for a 2-mark question that is 0.666. A one-fourth scheme (common in banking and CHSL) deducts a quarter — for a 1-mark question that is 0.25. Set the penalty-per-wrong to those values, or use the UPSC (+2/−0.666) and 1/4 banking (+1/−0.25) presets.
