What rank, percentile and position mean

Three different questions about the same test. The tool answers all three.

Rank

Position counted from the top. Rank 1 is the highest scorer in the cohort. Students with the same marks share a rank.

Percentile

The percentage of the cohort scoring at or below the student, on a 0–100 scale: 100 × (at-or-below ÷ total). The topper gets 100.

Batch position

Rank out of total, written plainly — "12th of 420". The line a parent understands at a glance on a progress message.

A worked example, end to end

One NEET mock, 420 students, one student's result — exactly how the maths runs.

A Class 12 NEET batch sits a full-syllabus mock out of 720. 420 students appear. One student, Aditi, scores 566. The marks sheet shows 357 students scored 566 or below (Aditi included), and the highest mark in the cohort was 681; the cohort average was 438.

rank     = 420 − 357 + 1  =  64th
percentile = 100 × (357 ÷ 420)  =  85.0
position  = 64th of 420
gap to top = 681 − 566  =  115 marks
vs average = 566 − 438  =  +128 marks

So Aditi is 64th of 420 with an 85.0 percentile in this test series — comfortably above the batch average, 115 marks behind the cohort topper. That is a real, checkable statement about her standing in the institute's own cohort. It is not "Aditi will get NEET AIR 64" — the national rank depends on the actual NEET paper and the full national pool, which this mock cannot know.

How the maths works

The calculator uses the standard percentile definition — the same one used for board results and entrance-exam scorecards. A student's percentile is the percentage of the group that scored equal to or below them: percentile = 100 × (students at or below ÷ total students). The cohort topper scores the 100 percentile, and students with identical marks share both a rank and a percentile.

Rank is the mirror image: counted from the top, it is total − (students at or below) + 1, so rank 1 is the highest scorer. Batch position simply expresses that rank against the cohort size, the way a progress report reads it: "64th of 420".

If you paste the full list of marks, the tool does the counting itself — it sorts the cohort, finds how many scored at or below each value, and applies the same two formulas. Everything runs in your browser; no marks are uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Rank, percentile, and what this tool does and doesn't do.

How is percentile calculated from marks? +

Percentile is the percentage of students who scored equal to or below a given student. The formula is percentile = 100 × (number of students scoring at or below you ÷ total number of students in the group). For example, if 320 of 400 students scored at or below you, your percentile is 80. This calculator uses that exact definition within your own test-series cohort.

What is the difference between rank and percentile? +

Rank is your position counted from the top: rank 1 is the highest scorer. Percentile is the percentage of the group at or below you, on a 0 to 100 scale. The topper holds rank 1 and the 100 percentile. Two students with the same marks share the same rank and the same percentile.

Does this tool predict my JEE Main or NEET All India Rank? +

No. This is a within-cohort calculator for one coaching institute's own test series. A national JEE Main or NEET UG rank is produced by the National Testing Agency using cross-shift normalisation over lakhs of candidates, calculated to seven decimal places. No external tool can reproduce that. This calculator tells you where a student stands inside your test series — which is what a coaching centre actually controls and can act on.

Is the test-series rank calculator free? +

Yes. It is free, needs no sign-up, and runs entirely in your browser. The marks you type are not uploaded anywhere — the calculation happens on your device.

What numbers do I need to use it? +

The student's marks, the maximum marks, the total number of students who sat the test, and how many students scored at or below the student. If you have the full list of marks, you can paste it and the tool counts the rest for you.

How are ties handled? +

Students with identical marks share the same rank and the same percentile. The percentile counts everyone scoring equal to or below the student, so tied students receive the same value — the same way boards and entrance exams treat ties before tie-breakers are applied.

Can I calculate percentile for a whole batch at once? +
