What is CTC?

CTC (cost to company) is the total amount an employer spends on an employee in a year, not the amount the employee receives. It bundles the gross salary with employer-side costs: the employer's PF contribution, gratuity accrual, insurance premiums and sometimes variable pay at target. Gross salary is what remains after those employer-side items: the payslip's top line. In-hand pay is lower still, after the employee's own PF, professional tax and income-tax TDS are deducted. This is why monthly take-home is typically 75–85% of CTC divided by twelve, and why two offers with the same CTC can pay quite differently.

What sits inside CTC beyond salary

Employer PF (12% on the ₹15,000 ceiling, commonly ₹1,800 a month), gratuity accrual (roughly 4.81% of basic annualised), group insurance premiums, and any at-target bonus or variable pay. All are real costs and some are real future value to you, but none arrives in the monthly bank credit, which is the gap between the offer letter's headline and the first payslip.

Reading an offer like an analyst

Ask four things of any CTC: the fixed-versus-variable split, the basic (it drives PF and gratuity), what employer-side items are counted in, and what reimbursement components require bills. The Code on Wages' 50% wage definition has pushed compliant structures toward 40-50% basic, so a CTC with a very thin basic deserves questions.

Quick example: A ₹6,00,000 CTC with 40% basic yields about ₹48,200 monthly gross after the employer's ₹1,800 PF sits aside, and roughly ₹46,200 in-hand before income tax, once your own PF and ₹200 professional tax deduct. The full walk-through is on the salary calculator.

Is a higher CTC always a better offer?

No, a higher-CTC offer with a large at-target bonus and thin basic can pay less monthly, and less reliably, than a lower-CTC offer with honest fixed pay. Decompose both offers to monthly in-hand and compare that; the CTC headline is the employer's number, not yours.
